Mission Kakatiya is a flagship program launched by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in India. The program aims to rejuvenate and restore the minor irrigation tanks, known as "Kakatiyas," in the state. These tanks were originally built during the Kakatiya dynasty, which ruled the region in the 12th and 13th centuries.
The objective of Mission Kakatiya is to increase the availability of water for irrigation, mitigate drought situations, and improve agricultural productivity in the state. The program involves desilting and repairing the tanks, strengthening the bunds (embankments), and improving the water storage capacity. It also includes the construction of new tanks where required.
By rejuvenating these tanks, the government aims to recharge groundwater levels, enhance soil moisture, and improve the overall ecology of the region. This, in turn, is expected to benefit farmers, as well as provide employment opportunities during the rehabilitation and maintenance works.
Mission Kakatiya is part of the broader initiative of the state government called "Neeru-Chettu," which focuses on water conservation, management, and development. The program has been implemented in several phases, covering multiple districts of Andhra Pradesh.
