Rheostat is a device which is used to vary the resistance in an electric circuit. A rheostat is basically a length of wire wound over a tube which has a sliding contact. Since wire has a resistance directly proportional to its length, you can change the resistance of the rheostat as you move the slider slowly. So it can be used to obtain a wide range of resistance.
