The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, also known as the Amritsar Massacre, took place on April 13, 1919, in the city of Amritsar, Punjab. General Reginald Dyer, the British Army officer in charge, ordered his troops to open fire on a peaceful crowd of unarmed Indian civilians who had gathered in Jallianwala Bagh to celebrate the Baisakhi festival and protest against the British colonial government's repressive policies.
