When HCl gas is passed through a saturated solution of common salt, pure NaCl is precipiated because
  • a)
HCl is highly ionised in solution
  • b)
HCl is highly soluble in water
  • c)
The solubility product of NaCl is lowered by HCl
  • d)
The ionic product of [Na⁺][Cl⁻] exceeds the solubility product of NaCl

When HCl gas is passed through a saturated solution of common salt, pu...
Explanation:

- When HCl gas is passed through a saturated solution of common salt (NaCl), the following reaction takes place:

HCl (g) + NaCl (aq) → NaCl (s) + HCl (aq)

- This means that the HCl gas reacts with the NaCl in the solution to form solid NaCl and aqueous HCl.
- The reason why pure NaCl is precipitated is because of the following:

- The solubility product of NaCl is the product of the concentrations of its ions in a saturated solution. It is given by the equation Ksp = [Na⁺][Cl⁻].
- When HCl is added to the solution, it reacts with the NaCl to form H⁺ and Cl⁻ ions. This means that the concentration of both Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions decreases.
- However, the concentration of H⁺ and Cl⁻ ions increases. This means that the ionic product of [H⁺][Cl⁻] in the solution exceeds the solubility product of NaCl.
- When this happens, the excess H⁺ and Cl⁻ ions combine to form HCl molecules, which are in the gaseous state. This reduces the concentration of both H⁺ and Cl⁻ ions in the solution, thereby lowering the ionic product below the solubility product.
- As a result, Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions combine to form solid NaCl, which precipitates out of the solution.

- Therefore, the correct answer is option 'D': The ionic product of [Na⁺][Cl⁻] exceeds the solubility product of NaCl.
