Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
HIV is the virus that causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Here is how it causes AIDS:
- Transmission: HIV is transmitted through contact with certain body fluids of a person with HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk.
- Target: HIV specifically targets CD4 T cells, which are a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in the immune system.
- Replication: Once inside the body, HIV replicates and destroys CD4 T cells, weakening the immune system over time.
- Progression to AIDS: As HIV continues to replicate and destroy CD4 T cells, the immune system becomes severely weakened. When the CD4 count drops below a certain level and the individual becomes susceptible to opportunistic infections, they are diagnosed with AIDS.
Overall, HIV leads to AIDS by progressively weakening the immune system, making the body vulnerable to various infections and diseases that a healthy immune system would normally be able to fight off.
