The Amazon Car Manufacturing company has four departments - Production, Quality, Sales and Finance - with the number of employees in these departments at the start of 2000 being 150, 110, 105 and 135 respectively. Solution: To minimise the number of years when a person from the Quality department works in the Sales department, transfer a person from Quality to Sales only when nothing else is possible. Whenever possible, transfer people from other departments into the Sales department.
In 2000 the inflow into Sales was 25 while the outflow from Quality was 20 and from Production was 40.
Thus, to minimise the number of years, one can assume that all 25 people coming into Sales were from Production.
Hence, in 2000, there were no people from Quality in Sales.
In 2001, there were no transfers from or into Quality.
In 2002, there were no transfers into or from Production. The inflow into Sales was 50, whereas the outflow from Finance and Quality was 30 and 20 respectively.
Therefore, the 20 people from Quality definitely moved into Sales. Thus, in 2002, people from the Quality department were definitely working in the Sales department.
Hence, option 2 can be eliminated.
In 2003, the outflow from Sales was 20 whereas the inflow into Quality was 65.
Therefore, to minimise the number of years, all the 20 people who had been transferred from Quality to Sales will now be transferred back to Quality and the Sales department will not have any employee from the Quality department working in it.
Thus, in 2003, there is no person from Quality working in Sales.
In 2004, since there were no transfers to or from Quality, again there was not a single person from Quality in the Sales department. Hence, option 4 can be eliminated. Therefore, nobody from the Quality department was working in Sales in 2005.
Hence, the only year when employees from Quality must have worked in Sales was 2002.
Hence, option 1.
In 2005, since the transfer was into the Quality department, no person from Quality could have moved into Sales.
