Transportation of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide in Humans

Oxygen and carbon dioxide are two important gases that are transported in human beings. Oxygen is required for respiration and carbon dioxide is a waste product that needs to be removed from the body. The process of transportation of oxygen and carbon dioxide is carried out by the respiratory system.

Transportation of Oxygen

The transportation of oxygen in humans is carried out by the red blood cells. The process of transportation of oxygen can be explained as follows:

- Oxygen is inhaled through the nostrils and enters the lungs.
- The oxygen then diffuses into the alveoli, where it comes in contact with the thin walls of the blood vessels.
- The oxygen then binds with the red blood cells to form oxyhaemoglobin.
- The oxyhaemoglobin is then transported to various parts of the body through the circulatory system.
- The oxyhaemoglobin dissociates into oxygen and haemoglobin in the tissues, where the oxygen is used for respiration.

Transportation of Carbon Dioxide

The transportation of carbon dioxide in humans is carried out by the red blood cells as well. The process of transportation of carbon dioxide can be explained as follows:

- Carbon dioxide is produced as a waste product during respiration.
- The carbon dioxide diffuses into the blood plasma and is transported to the red blood cells.
- In the red blood cells, the carbon dioxide reacts with water to form carbonic acid.
- The carbonic acid then dissociates into hydrogen ions and bicarbonate ions.
- The bicarbonate ions are then transported back into the blood plasma, while the hydrogen ions combine with haemoglobin to form deoxyhaemoglobin.
- The deoxyhaemoglobin is then transported back to the lungs, where it releases the carbon dioxide during exhalation.

Conclusion

Thus, the transportation of oxygen and carbon dioxide in humans is carried out by the respiratory and circulatory systems. The red blood cells play a crucial role in the transportation of these gases.
