Electron Dot Structure:



  • Sodium: Na - 2, 8, 1

  • Oxygen: O - 2, 6

  • Magnesium: Mg - 2, 8, 2



Formation of Na2O and MgO:



  • Na2O: Sodium oxide is formed by the transfer of one electron from each sodium atom to one oxygen atom. Two sodium atoms will donate their electrons to one oxygen atom to form a stable ionic compound.

  • MgO: Magnesium oxide is formed by the transfer of two electrons from magnesium atom to one oxygen atom. One magnesium atom will donate its two electrons to one oxygen atom to form a stable ionic compound.



Ions Present in the Compounds:



  • Na2O: Sodium oxide is an ionic compound that consists of Na+ and O2- ions. The sodium atom loses one electron to form a positively charged ion, Na+. The oxygen atom gains two electrons to form a negatively charged ion, O2-. The ionic bond is formed due to the attraction between the opposite charges of Na+ and O2- ions.

  • MgO: Magnesium oxide is also an ionic compound that consists of Mg2+ and O2- ions. The magnesium atom loses two electrons to form a positively charged ion, Mg2+. The oxygen atom gains two electrons to form a negatively charged ion, O2-. The ionic bond is formed due to the attraction between the opposite charges of Mg2+ and O2- ions.



Therefore, in both compounds, the transfer of electrons results in the formation of ionic bonds between the positively charged metal ions and negatively charged non-metal ions.
