Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana
The Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) was launched in 2001 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Government of India. The scheme aims to provide housing to the urban poor belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), free bonded labourers, and people living below the poverty line.
Objectives of the Scheme
The main objectives of the scheme are:
- To provide financial assistance to the beneficiaries for the construction of a house or for the up-gradation of their existing house.
- To provide basic amenities like water supply, sanitation, and electricity to the beneficiaries.
- To empower the urban poor by providing them with a sense of security and dignity.
Features of the Scheme
The scheme provides financial assistance to the beneficiaries in the form of a subsidy. The subsidy amount varies from state to state and ranges from 25% to 50% of the total cost of the house. The maximum subsidy amount is Rs. 50,000. The beneficiaries are required to contribute a minimum of 10% of the total cost of the house.
The scheme also provides for the construction of community toilets and community water supply systems.
Implementation of the Scheme
The scheme is implemented by the State Governments and Union Territory Administrations. The State Governments and Union Territory Administrations are responsible for the identification of the beneficiaries, the selection of the sites for the construction of the houses, and the monitoring of the progress of the scheme.
The scheme has been successful in providing housing to the urban poor belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, free bonded labourers, and people living below the poverty line. It has helped in improving the living conditions of the urban poor by providing them with a sense of security and dignity.
