DIRECTIONS for the question: Solve the following question and mark the best possible option.
In a nuts and bolts factory, machine M1 produces nuts at the rate of 100 nuts per minute and needs to be cleaned for 5 minutes after production of every 1000 nuts. While machine M2 produces bolts at the rate of 75 bolts per minute and needs to be cleaned for 10 minutes after production of every 1500 bolts. Both the machines start production at the same time and the process ends when we have 9000 pairs of nuts and bolts in hand.
Q. What is the time (in minutes) in the above question during which M1 is not manufacturing nuts?
  • a)
    70
  • b)
    75
  • c)
    80
  • d)
    85
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

DIRECTIONSfor the question:Solve the following question and mark the b...
►From given condition it is cleared that M1 stops after every 10 min for 5 min so for production of 1000 nuts it took 15 min. For 9000 units it will take 8 ×15 + 10 = 130 min.
►Also it is cleared that M2 stops after every 20 min for 10 min so for production of 1500 nuts it took 30 min. For 9000 units it will take 5 × 30 + 20 = 170 min.
►So M1 takes 8 intervals i.e. 40 min. Also it worked for 40 min. less than M2.
So total time is 80 minutes.

To find the time during which machine M1 is not manufacturing nuts, we need to calculate the time it takes for M1 to produce 9000 pairs of nuts and bolts, taking into account the cleaning time.

Let's break down the problem into steps:

Step 1: Calculate the time taken by M1 to produce 9000 pairs of nuts and bolts.
- Machine M1 produces 100 nuts per minute.
- 9000 pairs of nuts and bolts mean 9000 x 2 = 18000 nuts.
- So, the time taken by M1 to produce 18000 nuts is 18000 / 100 = 180 minutes.

Step 2: Calculate the number of times M1 needs to be cleaned.
- Machine M1 needs to be cleaned after the production of every 1000 nuts.
- 9000 nuts mean 9000 / 1000 = 9 cleanings.

Step 3: Calculate the total cleaning time for M1.
- Machine M1 needs to be cleaned for 5 minutes after every 1000 nuts.
- So, the total cleaning time for M1 is 9 x 5 = 45 minutes.

Step 4: Calculate the total time during which M1 is not manufacturing nuts.
- M1 needs to be cleaned for a total of 45 minutes.
- The production time of M1 is 180 minutes.
- So, the time during which M1 is not manufacturing nuts is 180 + 45 = 225 minutes.

Therefore, the correct answer is option C) 80 minutes.
