Obtaining Bleaching Powder from Limestone

Bleaching powder is a white powder, which is used as a disinfectant and for bleaching. It is prepared by the action of chlorine gas on dry slaked lime (Ca(OH)2).

Chemical Reaction Involved

The chemical equation for the preparation of bleaching powder from limestone is as follows:

CaCO3 + 2 Cl2 + H2O → Ca(ClO)2 + CO2 + 2 HCl

Step-by-Step Process

The following steps are involved in obtaining bleaching powder from limestone:

  • Step 1: Collection of Raw Materials - Limestone (CaCO3), chlorine gas (Cl2), and water (H2O) are collected as raw materials for the process.

  • Step 2: Preparation of Slaked Lime - Limestone is first converted into slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) by adding water to it. The reaction is as follows:

  • CaCO3 + H2O → Ca(OH)2 + CO2

  • Step 3: Addition of Chlorine Gas - Chlorine gas is then passed through the slaked lime, and the reaction takes place as follows:

  • Ca(OH)2 + 2 Cl2 → Ca(ClO)2 + H2O + CaCl2

  • Step 4: Drying and Packaging - The resulting bleaching powder is then dried and packaged for use.

The bleaching powder obtained is a white powder, which is used for bleaching, disinfecting, and for water treatment. It is also used in the textile industry for bleaching fabrics and in the paper industry for the bleaching of pulp.
