Anekantavada is a core theory and philosophy of Jainism. It is also known as the principle of non-absolutism or the doctrine of multiple perspectives. This principle emphasizes that reality is complex and has multiple aspects. It states that no single point of view or perspective can capture the complete truth about a phenomenon.

The principle of Anekantavada is based on the concept of Syadvada, which is the theory of conditioned predication. According to Syadvada, every statement about reality is true only from a certain point of view, under certain conditions, and for a certain period of time. Thus, instead of asserting a single absolute truth, Jainism proposes a pluralistic view of reality.

The Three Aspects of Anekantavada

Anekantavada has three aspects or principles that explain the nature of reality. These are:

1. Dravya - The principle of substance or materiality. According to this principle, reality is composed of an infinite number of substances or entities, each with its own characteristics and qualities.

2. Gunas - The principle of attributes or qualities. According to this principle, each substance or entity has multiple attributes or qualities that define its nature and behavior.

3. Paryaya - The principle of change or transformation. According to this principle, reality is constantly changing and transforming, and no entity or substance remains the same over time.

The Significance of Anekantavada

Anekantavada is a significant principle in Jainism because it promotes tolerance, respect, and empathy towards others. It teaches individuals to recognize the limitations of their own perspectives and to appreciate the diversity of viewpoints and experiences that exist in the world. It also emphasizes the importance of non-violence and non-harm towards all living beings, as the principle of Anekantavada recognizes the interconnectedness and interdependence of all things.
