Stomata opens and closes due to water and ion movement. When the light falls on the parts of plant, chloroplast carries out photosynthesis. ATP from photosynthesis powers sodium and potassium pump. Then the K+ ions are pumped into the guard cells, by creating a concentration gradient. For this uptake of K+ ions it requires protons (H+) ions then, K+ ions are exchange for the protons H+. Uptake of K+ ions is referred as influx of K+ ions into guard cells and outward movement of H+ ions is referred as efflux of H+ ions. This is an active ionic exchange and requires ATP energy and cytokinin (a plant hormone). In this way, the concentration of K+ ions increases in guard cells and at the same time, the concentration of H+ ions decreases in guard cells. As a result of this, guard cells swells and stomata opens.

Opening of Stomata:
Potassium ions play a crucial role in the opening of stomata in plant cells. When the concentration of potassium ions is high in the guard cells surrounding the stomata, water enters the cells through osmosis. This influx of water causes the guard cells to swell and bend, leading to the opening of the stomata.
Closing of Stomata:
On the other hand, the efflux of potassium ions from the guard cells results in the closing of stomata. When the concentration of potassium ions decreases, water moves out of the guard cells, causing them to shrink and the stomata to close. This process helps regulate the exchange of gases (such as oxygen and carbon dioxide) and water vapor between the plant and its environment.
Mid-Day Closure:
During mid-day, when the sunlight is intense and the plant is at risk of losing too much water through transpiration, the stomata close to conserve water. This closure is partly mediated by the efflux of potassium ions from the guard cells.

Therefore, the flux of potassium ions is responsible for both the opening and closing of stomata, as well as the mid-day closure in response to environmental conditions. This regulation ensures that the plant can efficiently exchange gases for photosynthesis while minimizing water loss.
