The Process If Increasing Or Enlarging The Apparent Size Of An Object.

Magnification Is Denoted By Numbers If The Number Is Less Than 1 Or Negative It's Means Reduction In Size When It Is Positive Or More Than 1 It's Mean Increment In Size

Formula -

Magnification (m) = h / h’

Here, h Is The Height Of Object And h' Is The Apparent Height

When Related With Object And Image Distance

M = h / h' = -v /u

Magnification Have No SI Unit...

Phenomenon of Magnification

Magnification is a phenomenon in which an object appears larger than its actual size when viewed through a lens or an optical instrument. This phenomenon is widely used in various optical instruments such as microscopes, telescopes, and cameras to get a closer and clearer view of distant or small objects.

Factors affecting magnification

  • Lens type: The type of lens used in an optical instrument plays a significant role in determining the magnification. Convex lenses are used to magnify objects, while concave lenses are used to reduce the size of objects.

  • Focal length: The distance between the lens and the object also affects magnification. The greater the focal length of the lens, the larger the magnification.

  • Distance: The distance between the lens and the object also determines the magnification. As the distance between the object and the lens increases, the magnification decreases.

Types of magnification

  • Linear magnification: Linear magnification is the ratio of the size of the image to the size of the object. It is expressed as M = hi/ho, where hi is the height of the image and ho is the height of the object.

  • Angular magnification: Angular magnification is the ratio of the angle subtended by the image at the eye to the angle subtended by the object at the eye. It is expressed as M = θi/θo, where θi is the angle subtended by the image and θo is the angle subtended by the object.

Applications of magnification

The phenomenon of magnification has numerous applications in various fields such as:

  • Microscopy: Magnification is used in microscopes to view objects that are too small to be seen with the naked eye.

  • Astronomy: Magnification is used in telescopes to view distant objects such as stars, planets, and galaxies.

  • Photography: Magnification is used in cameras to zoom in on distant objects and capture high-quality images.
