's crust. These mountains are typically found along the boundaries of tectonic plates where the plates collide or converge. When two plates converge, the heavier plate is forced under the lighter plate in a process called subduction. As the subducting plate gets pushed further into the Earth's mantle, it begins to melt and form magma. The magma rises to the surface and creates a series of volcanic eruptions that deposit layers of lava and ash. Over time, these layers of sediment build up and become compressed, creating a massive, folded mountain range. Examples of fold mountains include the Himalayas, the Alps, and the Rocky Mountains.
