Concept:
  • The liver is the largest gland of the body. It is made up of the left and right lobe. The left lobe is smaller than the right lobe. The right lobe forms 5/6 of the liver & the left lobe forms 1/6 of the liver.
  • The right and left hepatic ducts to develop from the right and left liver lobe. Both these ducts combine to form a Common Hepatic duct.
  • The gall bladder is situated below the right lobe of the liver.
  • The cystic duct of the gall bladder is connected to the common hepatic duct to form a common bile duct also called ductus choledocus.
Solution-
  • The liver does not produce any enzyme but secretes bile juice, which is responsible for the emulsification of fat & activation of lipases.
  • It also makes the environment alkaline which is required for the proper functioning of pancreatic and intestinal enzymes.
  • Thus, the liver does not produce any enzyme but is very important in the process of digestion.
Additional Information
  • Gastric glands of the stomach have different cells like chief cells, oxyntic cells & mucus neck cells which secretes different enzymes
  • Chief cells or peptic cells of the stomach secretes proenzyme pepsinogen. The proenzyme pepsinogen on exposure to hydrochloric acid gets converted into the active enzyme pepsin
  • The enzyme pepsin is responsible for the digestion of proteins.
  • The Salivary glands secrete saliva which is emptied into the buccal cavity through small openings called salivary ducts.
  • Saliva contains enzymes salivary amylase and lysozyme. Salivary amylase performs the digestion of starch, and lysozyme kills the pathogenic bacterias
  • The pancreatic juice contains inactive enzymes – trypsinogen, chymotrypsinogen, procarboxypeptidases, amylases, lipases, and nucleases. Trypsinogen is activated by an enzyme, enterokinase, secreted by the intestinal mucosa into active trypsin, which in turn activates the other enzymes in the pancreatic juice.
