Explanation:

Types of Mirrors

There are two types of mirrors:

  • Concave mirror

  • Convex mirror

Characteristics of Concave Mirror

A concave mirror is a type of mirror that curves inward. It has the following characteristics:

  • It converges the light rays that are parallel to its principal axis.

  • It can form both real and virtual images depending upon the position of the object.

  • When the object is placed beyond the focal point, a real inverted image is formed.

  • When the object is placed between the focal point and the mirror, a virtual and erect image is formed.

Characteristics of Convex Mirror

A convex mirror is a type of mirror that curves outward. It has the following characteristics:

  • It diverges the light rays that are parallel to its principal axis.

  • It always forms a virtual and erect image.

  • The image formed is smaller than the object.

Answer Explanation

The student wants to project the image of a candle flame on the walls of the school laboratory by using a mirror. To project the image on the wall, a real image is required. A concave mirror can form a real image when the object is placed beyond the focal point. Therefore, the student should use a concave mirror to project the image of a candle flame on the walls of the school laboratory.

Option 'A' is incorrect because a convex mirror always forms a virtual image.

Option 'B' is incorrect because a concave mirror can form both real and virtual images depending upon the position of the object.

Option 'D' is incorrect because a convex mirror always forms a virtual image.
