what is the relation between the refractive index & the angle of devia...
When a ray of light gets refracted, the angle of deviation is the angle between the path that the ray would have taken had it not got refracted and the path that it actually takes after refraction.
⇒δ=i−r,⇒δ=i−r, where δ,iδ,i and rr are the angle of deviation, angle of incidence and angle of refraction.
μ=sinisinr,μ=sin⁡isin⁡r, where μμ is the refractive index of the medium.
⇒sinr=siniμ⇒r=arcsin(siniμ).⇒sin⁡r=sin⁡iμ⇒r=arcsin⁡(sin⁡iμ).
⇒⇒ For any given angle of incidence, δ=i−arcsin(siniμ).δ=i−arcsin⁡(sin⁡iμ).
This is the relation between the refractive index and the angle of deviation for any particular angle of incidence. IN SIMPLE WORDS The deviation angle in a prism depends upon: Refractive index of the prism: The refractive index depends on the material and the wavelength of the light. The larger the refractive index, the larger the deviation angle. Angle of the prism: The larger the prism angle, the larger the deviation angle.
