A solid consists of a large number of atoms, When atoms bind together to form a solid, each atom is influenced by the presence of other neighbouring átoms. An electron in an isolated atom has fixed orbits of energy. The same electron in a solid has a range of energy, energy band in which it can orbit. Thus an energy band in a solid corresponds to the discrete energy levels of an atom.
There is a valence band occupied by valence electrons separated by a forbidden gap from the conduction band in which electrons move freely. The forbidden gap in insulators is about 6eV. In semiconductors it is nearly leV. In metals there is no forbidden gáp, the valence and conduction bands overlap. Thus metals are good conductors of electricity.
In the case of semiconductors some valence electrons acquire energies to cross over the energy gap and jump from the valence band to the conduction band. At OK the electrons have zero thermal energy. There is no energy available. Thus no covalent bonds are broken and no electrons available for conduction. The reason is correct. It correctly explains the assertion that at OK the conductivity of a semiconductor is zero.
