Measures for Soil Conservation

Soil erosion is a major concern for farmers and agriculturalists, as it can lead to decreased productivity and even land degradation. Therefore, various measures have been introduced to conserve soil and prevent soil erosion. One such measure is:


  • Contour Ploughing: This method involves ploughing along the contour lines of a slope. By doing so, the water that falls on the slope is unable to flow downhill and cause soil erosion. Instead, it gets trapped in the ridges created by the ploughing, allowing it to slowly seep into the soil and recharge the groundwater.


  • Terrace Farming: This method involves creating flat platforms or terraces on a slope, which are then used for farming. This helps to prevent soil erosion by reducing the slope gradient and allowing water to be retained on the terraces. Terrace farming is commonly used in hilly regions, where conventional farming practices are not possible.


  • Strip Cropping: This method involves planting different crops in alternate strips. By doing so, the crops act as a barrier against wind and water erosion, and also help to retain moisture in the soil. Strip cropping is particularly useful in areas with high winds or heavy rainfall.


  • Afforestation: This method involves planting trees on barren lands or on lands that have been degraded due to soil erosion. Trees help to stabilize the soil, prevent erosion, and improve soil fertility. Additionally, they also provide numerous environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and climate regulation.
