Relative Speed:
- The relative speed of the policeman with respect to the thief is 12 km/hr - 8 km/hr = 4 km/hr.

Time taken to overtake:
- The time taken by the policeman to overtake the thief is 500 metres / 4 km/hr = 0.5 hours.

Distance run by the thief:
- Distance run by the thief before being overtaken = Speed of thief x Time taken = 8 km/hr x 0.5 hours = 4 km.
- Converting 4 km to meters, we get 4 km x 1000 m/km = 4000 metres.
Therefore, the thief will run 1000 metres before he is overtaken by the policeman (Option B).
