However, the H+ ions have a greater tendency to gain electrons and form hydrogen gas (H2) than the Na+ ions. Therefore, hydrogen gas is produced at the cathode instead of sodium metal.

At the anode, the Cl- ions and OH- ions are attracted towards the positively charged electrode. However, the OH- ions have a greater tendency to lose electrons and form oxygen gas (O2) than the Cl- ions. Therefore, chlorine gas (Cl2) is produced at the anode instead of oxygen gas.

Hence, the assertion is true but the reasoning is false. The correct reason for the production of hydrogen gas and chlorine gas during the electrolysis of concentrated aqueous sodium chloride solution is the difference in the tendency of the ions to gain or lose electrons and form gases.
