This ignition causes a rapid combustion reaction, where the hydrocarbons in the fuel react with the oxygen in the air to produce carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other byproducts.

The combustion reaction releases a large amount of heat, which causes the gases in the cylinder to rapidly expand. This expansion drives the piston down, turning the crankshaft and ultimately transferring the mechanical energy to the wheels.

Chemistry also plays a role in the exhaust system of automobiles. After the combustion process, the byproducts of the reaction, such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, are expelled through the exhaust system. Catalytic converters, which contain metal catalysts, are used to convert harmful gases into less harmful substances before they are released into the atmosphere.

This system typically uses a mixture of water and coolant, which circulates through the engine to absorb heat and then releases it through the radiator.
