Heterotrophic nutrition is a mode of nutrition in which organisms obtain readymade organic food from outside sources. This type of nutrition is seen in organisms that are unable to synthesize their own organic nutrients and therefore rely on external sources for their nutrition. These organisms are called heterotrophs. Heterotrophic nutrition is of three types: saprophytic, parasitic, and holozoic nutrition.
1. Saprophytic Nutrition:
- Organisms that obtain their nutrition from dead and decaying organic matter are known as saprophytes.
- These organisms secrete enzymes that break down complex organic compounds into simpler substances.
- The simpler substances are then absorbed by the saprophytes and used as a source of energy and nutrients.
- Examples of saprophytic organisms include fungi and certain bacteria.
2. Parasitic Nutrition:
- Parasitic organisms obtain their nutrition from living organisms, known as hosts, by directly feeding on their tissues or body fluids.
- These organisms harm the host in the process and rely on the host for their survival.
- Examples of parasitic organisms include ticks, fleas, and tapeworms.
3. Holozoic Nutrition:
- Holozoic nutrition is the type of nutrition seen in most animals, including humans.
- In this type of nutrition, organisms consume complex organic matter, such as plants or other animals, and digest it internally.
- The ingested food is broken down into simpler substances through mechanical and chemical digestion.
- These simpler substances are then absorbed by the organism and used for energy and growth.
