Which of the following is not matched correctly with its definition?
  • a)
Isotopes Atoms that have the same atomic number but different mass numbers
  • b)
Isobars Atoms of different elements having same mass number but different atomic number
  • c)
Isotones Atoms that have same atomic numbers and mass number and the number of neutrons are also same
  • d)
Isoelectronic Atoms that have the same electronic structure and the same number of valence electrons
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Which of the following is not matched correctly with its definition?a...
  1. Isotopes: Isotopes are variants of a particular element which differ in the number of neutron. All isotopes of a given element have the same number of protons in each atom. Carbon 12 and Carbon 14 are both isotopes of carbon, one with 6 neutrons and one with 8 neutrons (both with 6 protons).
  2. Isobars: Isobars are atoms of different chemical elements that have the same number of nucleons (neutrons and protons). Correspondingly, isobars differ in atomic number (or number of protons) but have the same mass number.
  3. Isotones: Isotones are the atoms of different elements which contain the same number of neutrons. However both the atomic number and mass number are different for the isotones.
  4. Isoelectronic: Isoelectronic are molecules differing in the atoms that comprise them but having the same number of valance electrons and the same structure (that is, the same number of atoms with the same connectivity).
Hence, the correct option is (c).
