Difference between cumulatuve frequency graph, cumulatuve frequency polygon and ogive?
Verified Answer
Difference between cumulatuve frequency graph, cumulatuve frequency po...
The main difference between an ogive and a frequency polygon is - An ogive is a plot of cumulative values while a frequency polygon is a plot of the values themselves.

An ogive is also called the cumulative frequency graph. It is a curve which shows the cumulative frequency of a given set of data. For un-grouped data the data is shown on the x-axis and the cumulative frequency is plotted on the y-axis.

To draw a frequency polygon first we have to choose a class interval like we do for histograms. Then we represent
the values of the scores in the data on the x-axis. After that we put a tick mark in the middle of each class interval and label it. This is the middle value of the class.

Cumulative Frequency Graph vs Cumulative Frequency Polygon vs Ogive

Cumulative Frequency Graph
- A cumulative frequency graph is a visual representation of cumulative frequencies within a dataset.
- It consists of a series of bars, with each bar representing the cumulative frequency of a particular class interval.
- The bars are drawn next to each other, and the height of each bar corresponds to the cumulative frequency of that class interval.
- Cumulative frequency graphs are useful for showing the distribution of a dataset and identifying patterns or trends.

Cumulative Frequency Polygon
- A cumulative frequency polygon is a line graph that connects the midpoints of the top of each bar in a cumulative frequency graph.
- It is used to show the cumulative frequencies in a dataset in a more continuous and smooth manner.
- The line starts at the left side of the first bar and ends at the right side of the last bar, connecting all the midpoints of the bars.
- Cumulative frequency polygons are helpful in visually representing the cumulative frequencies and trends in a dataset.

Ogive
- An ogive is a graph that represents the cumulative frequencies using a smooth curve rather than bars or lines.
- It is created by plotting points at the upper class boundaries against their corresponding cumulative frequencies.
- The curve is drawn by connecting these points smoothly, resulting in a continuous curve that represents the cumulative frequencies.
- Ogives are useful for visually displaying the cumulative distribution of a dataset and identifying patterns or trends more clearly.
In summary, while cumulative frequency graph uses bars to represent cumulative frequencies, cumulative frequency polygon connects the midpoints of the bars with lines, and ogive represents cumulative frequencies using a smooth curve. Each of these graphical representations serves a different purpose in visually analyzing and interpreting data.
