The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is the apex body for disaster management in India, responsible for overseeing and coordinating measures for disaster prevention, mitigation, response, and recovery. It was established by the Government of India in September 2005 following the tsunami that hit the southeast coast of India in December 2004.The NDMA has been at the forefront of India’s efforts to increase its capacity to manage natural disasters, emphasizing in particular the need to strengthen preparedness and early warning systems, enhance local resilience, and improve coordination among various departments and agencies. Currently, it is leading the government’s efforts to develop a comprehensive national policy on disaster management, an action plan to implement this policy, and a national framework for disaster risk reduction. The NDMA also works to promote public awareness on disaster risks and encourage better understanding of the field through research and training.
