Which of the following statements about the mechanism of ventilation/b...
Incorrect Statement about Mechanism of Ventilation/Breathing:

C. Inspiration is a passive and expiration is an active process.

Explanation:

  • Inspiration: During inspiration, the diaphragm contracts and moves downwards, while the external intercostal muscles contract and lift the ribs up and out. This increases the volume of the thoracic cavity and decreases the pressure inside the lungs. As a result, air is drawn into the lungs from the atmosphere.

  • Expiration: During expiration, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards, while the external intercostal muscles relax and the ribs move downwards and inwards. This decreases the volume of the thoracic cavity and increases the pressure inside the lungs. As a result, air is pushed out of the lungs and into the atmosphere.

  • Role of Muscles: The external intercostal muscles and diaphragm play an important role in the mechanism of ventilation/breathing. They contract and relax to change the volume and pressure inside the thoracic cavity and lungs.

  • Passive vs Active Process: Inspiration is an active process that requires the contraction of muscles. Expiration can be either an active or passive process depending on the situation. During quiet breathing, expiration is a passive process that does not require the contraction of muscles. However, during exercise or forced breathing, expiration becomes an active process that involves the contraction of the internal intercostal muscles and the abdominal muscles.

Therefore, option C is incorrect as it states that inspiration is a passive process, which is not true.
