A process called coral bleaching. When ocean temperatures rise above their normal range, corals expel the algae called zooxanthellae that live within their tissues. These algae provide corals with food through photosynthesis and give them their vibrant colors. However, under stress from high temperatures, corals release the algae, causing them to turn completely white or pale. This bleaching process weakens the corals and makes them more susceptible to disease and death. If the temperature stress persists for a prolonged period, the corals may die, leading to the loss of entire coral reef ecosystems.
