The hormone which regulates the basal metabolism in our body is secreted from the thyroid gland.

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck, just below the Adam's apple. It plays a crucial role in regulating various metabolic processes in the body, including basal metabolism. The hormone produced by the thyroid gland that regulates basal metabolism is called thyroid hormone.

Thyroid Hormone:
Thyroid hormone is actually a group of hormones produced by the thyroid gland, the most important of which are triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones are synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine and iodine. The production and secretion of thyroid hormone are controlled by the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland.

Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Thyroid Axis:
The hypothalamus, a region in the brain, secretes thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) which stimulates the pituitary gland to release thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH then acts on the thyroid gland, stimulating it to produce and release T3 and T4 hormones. T3 is the biologically active form, while T4 is converted into T3 in various tissues.

Role in Basal Metabolism:
Basal metabolism refers to the minimum amount of energy required to sustain basic physiological functions at rest, such as breathing, maintaining body temperature, and cell production. Thyroid hormone plays a vital role in regulating the basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the rate at which the body uses energy during these resting functions.

Thyroid hormone affects the metabolism of almost all tissues in the body. It increases the oxygen consumption and energy production of cells, resulting in an overall increase in metabolic rate. It influences the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, as well as the regulation of body temperature. It also has important roles in growth and development, nervous system function, and cardiovascular health.

Effects of Thyroid Hormone Imbalance:
An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) leads to excessive production of thyroid hormone, causing symptoms such as weight loss, rapid heartbeat, nervousness, and increased sweating. On the other hand, an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) results in insufficient production of thyroid hormone, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, and depression.

In conclusion, the hormone that regulates basal metabolism in our body is secreted from the thyroid gland. The thyroid hormone influences various metabolic processes and is vital for maintaining overall health and well-being. Any imbalance in thyroid hormone production can have significant effects on the body's metabolism and overall functioning.
