People living at sea level have around 5 million RBG per cubic millimetre of their blood whereas those living at an altitude of 5400 metres have around 8 million. This is because at high altitude
  • a)
atmospheric O2 level is less and hence more RBCs are needed to absorb the required amount of O2 to survive
  • b)
there is more UV radiation which enhances RBC - production
  • c)
people eat more nutritive food, therefore more RBCs are formed
  • d)
people get pollution - free air to breathe and more oxygen is available
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

People living at sea level have around 5 million RBG per cubic millim...
At high altitudes composition of air remains almost same as at sea level, but density (barometric pressure) of air gradually decreases due to which arterial pO2 is also decreased (hypoxemia). High altitudes presents with complex conditions to which the human body has to acclimatise. Number of red blood cells per unit volume of blood is likely to be higher in a person living at high altitudes. This is in response to the air being less dense at high altitude. More number of red blood cells are needed to trap O2 from rarefied air having low pO2 (partial pressure of oxygen).

People who lives at High altitude needs approx 8 millions RBCs , coz there O2 concentration gradient is low & to maintain the O2 concentration level there's need more RBCs just to survive !!
