Government of India Act of 1935

The Government of India Act of 1935 was an important constitutional reform enacted by the British Parliament to provide a framework for the governance of British India. The act was a significant step towards India's eventual independence and introduced several important features, including:

- An All-India federation: The act proposed the creation of an All-India federation with a central government and provincial governments. The federation was never implemented due to the opposition of some Indian political parties.
- Provincial autonomy: The act granted a large measure of autonomy to the provinces and allowed them to have their own constitutions, governments, and legislative assemblies. This was a significant development as it gave Indians more control over their own affairs.
- Bicameral legislature: The act introduced a bicameral legislature at the centre with a Federal Assembly and a Council of States. The Federal Assembly was to be elected by direct election while the Council of States was to be elected by the provincial legislative assemblies.
- Provincial diarchy: The act introduced the concept of provincial diarchy, which meant that the executive powers of the provincial government were divided between the Governor and the Ministers responsible to the legislative assembly. This was aimed at giving Indians a greater say in the governance of their provinces.

Not a feature: Diarchy at the Centre as well as in the provinces

Diarchy was not a feature of the Government of India Act of 1935 because it was only introduced in the Government of India Act of 1919. Diarchy was a system of dual government in which certain subjects were transferred to Indian Ministers while others remained under the control of the Governor-General. The system was not very successful and was widely criticized by Indian politicians. The Government of India Act of 1935 replaced diarchy with provincial autonomy, which gave more power to the Indian Ministers responsible to the provincial legislative assemblies.
