Consider the following statements about the term ‘Secular’...
  • Statement 1 is incorrect: The term ‘Secular’ was added through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976.
  • Statement 2 is incorrect: Indian model of secularism is called the soft model of secularism. It provides for a porous wall of separation between State and religion, i.e. state can intervene in religious matters to give progressive voices within every religion and to allow disagreement with some aspects of religion, e.g. abolition of Sati, Hindu Code Bill, Untouchability etc. However, religion is strictly prohibited in state matters, hence disallowing mobilising of electoral support on religious lines. On the other hand, the French model of secularism is called the hard model of secularism that provides for strict separation of State and religion.
  • Statement 3 is correct: Article 15 and 16 prohibits State from discrimination on the ground religion and Article 44 provides for uniform civil code and thus promotes secularism in India. Other Articles of the Constitution that promote secularism are Article 14, 25, 26, 27, 28.
