The pressure conditions over the Pacific Ocean and Indian ocean affect...
Statement 1: If the pressure difference between Tahiti in the Pacific Ocean and Darwin in the Indian Ocean is negative, it would mean a good monsoon season in India.

The pressure conditions over the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean play a significant role in influencing the monsoons in India. The difference in pressure between Tahiti in the Pacific Ocean and Darwin in the Indian Ocean is known as the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). A negative SOI indicates higher pressure in Darwin compared to Tahiti.

A negative SOI typically indicates the presence of El Nino conditions, which are associated with weak monsoons in India. During El Nino events, the sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean rise, causing changes in atmospheric circulation patterns. These changes can lead to a decrease in rainfall over the Indian subcontinent, resulting in a weaker monsoon season.

Therefore, statement 1 is incorrect. A negative pressure difference between Tahiti and Darwin indicates El Nino conditions, which are associated with weaker monsoons in India, rather than a good monsoon season.

Statement 2: The El Nino event is often associated with delays in the Southwest Monsoon.

El Nino events have a significant impact on the monsoon season in India. During El Nino, the sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean rise, leading to changes in atmospheric circulation patterns. These changes can result in a delay in the onset of the Southwest Monsoon, which is the primary monsoon season in India.

El Nino events typically weaken the monsoon circulation, which can delay the arrival of the monsoon rains over the Indian subcontinent. This delay can have adverse effects on agriculture and water resources, as the monsoon season is crucial for rainfall-dependent activities in India.

Therefore, statement 2 is correct. The El Nino event is often associated with delays in the Southwest Monsoon.

In conclusion, the correct answer is option 'B', as statement 1 is incorrect and statement 2 is correct. The pressure difference between Tahiti and Darwin, known as the SOI, indicates El Nino conditions and is associated with weaker monsoons in India. Additionally, El Nino events are often associated with delays in the onset of the Southwest Monsoon.

The pressure conditions over the Pacific Ocean and Indian ocean affect...
  • The changes in the pressure conditions over the southern oceans affect the monsoons. Normally when the tropical eastern south Pacific Ocean experiences high pressure, the tropical eastern Indian Ocean experiences low pressure. But in certain years, there is a reversal in the pressure conditions and the eastern Pacific has lower pressure in comparison to the eastern Indian Ocean. This periodic change in pressure conditions is known as the Southern Oscillation or SO. The difference in pressure over Tahiti (Pacific Ocean, 18°S/149°W) and Darwin in northern Australia (Indian Ocean, 12°30’S/131°E) is computed to predict the intensity of the monsoons. If the pressure differences were negative, it would mean below average and late monsoons. Hence statement 1 is not correct.
  • A feature connected with the SO is the El Nino. EI-Nino is a complex weather system that appears once every three to seven years, bringing drought, floods, and other weather extremes to different parts of the world. The system involves oceanic and atmospheric phenomena with the appearance of warm currents off the coast of Peru in the Eastern Pacific and affects weather in many places including India. EI-Nino is merely an extension of the warm equatorial current which gets replaced temporarily by cold Peruvian current or Humbolt current.
  • This current increases the temperature of the water on the Peruvian coast by 10°C. This results in:
    1. the distortion of equatorial atmospheric circulation;
    2. irregularities in the evaporation of seawater;
    3. reduction in the amount of planktons which further reduces the number of fish in the sea.
  • EI-Nino is used in India for forecasting long-range monsoon rainfall. The EI-Nino has been generally known to suppress monsoon rainfall in India. El Nino years tend to be drier than average. Hence statement 2 is correct
