Consider the following statements with respect to Earths biodiversity:...
Following are the facts about the earth’s biodiversity based on the currently available species inventories:
  • More than 70 per cent of all the species recorded are animals, while plants (including algae, fungi, bryophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms) comprise no more than 22 per cent of the total. Hence statement 1 is not correct.
  • Among animals, insects are the most species-rich taxonomic group, making up more than 70 per cent of the total. That means, out of every 10 animals on this planet, 7 are insects. Hence statement 3 is correct.
  • The number of fungi species in the world is more than the combined total of the species of fishes, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. Arthropoda is the largest phylum in the animal kingdom, which includes familiar forms as lobsters, crabs, spiders, mites, insects, centipedes, and millipedes. About 84 percent of all known species of animals are members of this phylum. Hence statement 2 is correct.

Consider the following statements with respect to Earths biodiversity:...
To determine the correct statements regarding Earth's biodiversity, let's evaluate each statement individually:

1) Plants comprise more than 40% of all the species on Earth.
- This statement is incorrect. While plants are incredibly diverse and play a crucial role in ecosystems, they do not comprise more than 40% of all species on Earth. In fact, the estimated number of plant species ranges from 300,000 to 400,000, which is significantly lower than the total number of species on Earth.

2) The number of fungi species in the world is more than that of amphibians.
- This statement is correct. Fungi are a diverse group of organisms that include mushrooms, molds, and yeasts. The estimated number of fungal species is around 1.5 million, which is higher than the number of known amphibian species. Amphibians, such as frogs, toads, and salamanders, have been extensively studied, and there are currently around 7,000 known species.

3) Among animals, insects are the most species-rich taxonomic group.
- This statement is correct. Insects are indeed the most species-rich group among animals. In fact, they represent over 50% of all known animal species. There are estimated to be around 1 million described species of insects, with many more yet to be discovered. Insects play vital roles in ecosystems, serving as pollinators, decomposers, and a food source for other animals.

Based on the evaluation of each statement, the correct answer is option 'B' - 2 and 3 only.
