Burning Magnesium Ribbon in Carbon Dioxide Gas Jar

When burning magnesium ribbon is brought in the gas jar of carbon dioxide, the following observations can be made:

(i) It keeps on burning: Magnesium is an extremely reactive metal and it burns with a bright white flame in the presence of air. When we bring the burning magnesium ribbon in the gas jar of carbon dioxide, it continues to burn as long as there is enough oxygen available from the reactant. The balanced chemical equation for the reaction between magnesium and oxygen is:

2Mg + O2 → 2MgO

(ii) It gets extinguished: However, after some time, the burning magnesium ribbon gets extinguished. This is because carbon dioxide is a non-supporter of combustion. It does not allow the burning process to continue by limiting the supply of oxygen. The balanced chemical equation for the reaction between magnesium and carbon dioxide is:

2Mg + CO2 → 2MgO + C

(iii) Although CO2 is non-supporter of combustion but burning magnesium breaks CO2 into carbon and oxygen helps in burning: This statement is incorrect. Burning magnesium cannot break down carbon dioxide into carbon and oxygen. In fact, it reacts with carbon dioxide to form magnesium oxide and carbon.

(iv) Carbon dioxide is a supporter of combustion: This statement is also incorrect. Carbon dioxide is a non-supporter of combustion. It does not support the burning of magnesium ribbon, and instead limits the supply of oxygen required for the reaction to continue.

Therefore, the correct option is (B) (i) and (iii). The burning magnesium ribbon initially continues to burn in the gas jar of carbon dioxide, but eventually gets extinguished due to the non-supportive nature of carbon dioxide towards combustion.

Burning magnesium ribbon is brought in the gas jar of carbon dioxide. ...
Magnesium burns in carbon dioxide because the oxygen in the carbon dioxide is able to bond with magnesium and produce an oxide
2Mg(s) + CO2 (g) → 2MgO(s) + C(s)
