Given information:

- Rishi drives 10 km North from his house.
- He then takes a left turn and drives for 2 km.
- After picking up his friend, he takes a right turn and drives for 5 km.
- Finally, he takes another right turn and drives for 2 km to reach his destination.

To find:

- How many kilometers Rishi would have required to drive, has he drove straight from his house to the party?

Solution:

If Rishi had driven straight from his house to the party, he would have covered the shortest distance possible. Let us try to visualize the given information on a map to find the shortest distance.

- From his house, Rishi drives 10 km North. Let us mark this point as A on the map.
- He then takes a left turn and drives for 2 km. Let us mark this point as B on the map.
- After picking up his friend, he takes a right turn and drives for 5 km. Let us mark this point as C on the map.
- Finally, he takes another right turn and drives for 2 km to reach his destination. Let us mark this point as D on the map.

The map looks like the following:

```
D
|
C
|
B- A
```

To find the shortest distance between A and D, we can draw a straight line between them. Let us mark this line as AD on the map. Now, we can see that triangle ABD and triangle BCD are right-angled triangles.

Using Pythagoras theorem, we can find the length of AD as follows:

AB² + BD² = AD² (using triangle ABD)
BD² + BC² = CD² (using triangle BCD)

Substituting the given values, we get:

10² + 2² = AD²
5² + 2² = CD²

Solving for AD and CD, we get:

AD = √104 = 10.2 km
CD = √29 = 5.4 km

Therefore, the shortest distance between A and D is AD = 10.2 km. This is the distance Rishi would have required to drive, has he driven straight from his house to the party.

Answer: Option (a) 15 km.
