Equivalent Circuit for a Capacitor:
  • No capacitor is ideal or perfect i.e., electrical energy supplied to a capacitor is not entirely stored in the electric field between the capacitor plates.
  • A part of the supplied electrical energy is converted into heat due to the resistances of the various parts of the capacitor.

The total effective resistance is made up of the following resistances:
  • Resistance of the lead wires
  • Resistance of the plates
  • Insulation resistance of the dielectric
  • Resistance due to polarisation of the dielectric.
Fig. above shows the equivalent circuit of a capacitor. We can replace all the resistances with a single equivalent series resistance Rse as shown in Fig below.
The value of Rse is such that I2R loss in it is equal to the total loss in the capacitor.

The total effective resistance of the practical capacitor is made of w...
The total effective resistance of a practical capacitor is determined by several parameters. These parameters include the resistance of the lead wires, the resistance of the plates, the insulation resistance of the dielectric, and the resistance due to polarization of the dielectric.

Resistance of the Lead Wires:
- The lead wires of a capacitor have a certain amount of resistance. This resistance is typically small but not negligible, especially for capacitors with long and thin lead wires.
- The resistance of the lead wires can affect the overall effective resistance of the capacitor, especially at high frequencies or in applications where low resistance is critical.

Resistance of the Plates:
- The plates of a capacitor are made of conductive material, typically metal. However, even metals have a certain amount of resistance.
- The resistance of the plates can contribute to the overall effective resistance of the capacitor.
- This resistance is typically very small, especially for capacitors with large surface areas and short distances between the plates.

Insulation Resistance of the Dielectric:
- The dielectric material used in a capacitor provides electrical insulation between the plates.
- However, even the dielectric material may have some resistance.
- The insulation resistance of the dielectric can affect the overall effective resistance of the capacitor.
- Higher insulation resistance leads to lower leakage current and thus lower effective resistance.

Resistance due to Polarization of the Dielectric:
- When a voltage is applied to a capacitor, the dielectric material may become polarized.
- This polarization can introduce additional resistance to the capacitor.
- The resistance due to polarization of the dielectric can affect the overall effective resistance of the capacitor.

In conclusion, the total effective resistance of a practical capacitor is influenced by the resistance of the lead wires, the resistance of the plates, the insulation resistance of the dielectric, and the resistance due to polarization of the dielectric. Therefore, the correct answer is option 'D' - all of the above parameters contribute to the total effective resistance of a practical capacitor.
