Calculating Secondary Voltage of Transformer

Given:

  • Primary voltage (Vp) = 230 V/460 V

  • Primary resistance (Rp) = 0.2 Ω

  • Primary reactance (Xp) = 0.5 Ω

  • Secondary resistance (Rs) = 0.75 Ω

  • Secondary reactance (Xs) = 1.8 Ω

  • Load current (I) = 10 A

  • Power factor (PF) = 0.8 lagging

Calculating Secondary Voltage:

  1. Calculate the impedance of the load (Z) using the power factor formula:
    PF = cos(θ) = Real Power/Apparent Power = P/S
    where:
    P = Real Power
    S = Apparent Power
    θ = Angle between current and voltage
    cos(θ) = PF = 0.8 lagging

    Therefore, cos(θ) = 0.8
    θ = cos⁻¹(0.8) = 36.87°

    Real Power = I*Vp*cos(θ) = 10*230*cos(36.87°) = 1809.4 W
    Apparent Power = I*Vp = 10*230 = 2300 VA

    So, PF = P/S = 1809.4/2300 = 0.786

    Therefore, the impedance of the load (Z) = Vp/I*PF = 230/(10*0.8) = 28.75 Ω

  2. Calculate the total impedance (ZT) of the transformer using the primary and secondary resistances and reactances:
    ZT = sqrt((Rp+Rs)² + (Xp+Xs)²) = sqrt((0.2+0.75)² + (0.5+1.8)²) = 2.149 Ω

  3. Calculate the secondary voltage (Vs) using the voltage ratio formula:
    Vs/Vp = Ns/Np
    where:
    Ns = number of turns in the secondary coil
    Np = number of turns in the primary coil

    Since the transformer is rated 230/460 V, the voltage ratio is 2:
    Vs/Vp = 2/1
    Vs = Vp*2 = 230*2 = 460 V

  4. Calculate the secondary current (Is) using Ohm's Law:
    Is = Vs/ZT = 460/2.149 = 214.1 A

  5. Calculate the voltage drop across the secondary resistance and reactance:
    VRs = Is*Rs = 214.1*0.75 = 160.6 V
    VXs = Is*Xs = 214.1*1.8 = 385.4 V

  6. Calculate the secondary voltage under load:
    Vs(load) = Vs - VRs - VXs = 460 - 160.6 - 385.4 = 424 V

Therefore, the secondary voltage when supplying 10 A at 0.8 p.f. lagging is 424.5 V (

Given: R1 = 0.2 Ω, X1=0.5 Ω, R2=0.75 Ω, X2=1.8 Ω
I2=10A, pf=0.8lag, V1/V2= 230/460 V
Transformation ratio, K=460/230=2
Resistance referred to secondary, R02 =R2+K2 R1
⇒R02=0.75+22*0.2=1.55 Ω
Reactance referred to secondary,X02=X2+ K2 X1= 1.8+22*0.5=3.8 Ω
Voltage drop = I2(R02cosф +sinф )= 10*(1.55*0.8+3.8*0.6) =35.2V
∴ Secondary terminal voltage =460 - 35.2= 424.8V
