Matilda, the protagonist of the short story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, was unhappy in her early married life due to several reasons:



  • Poor Financial Condition: Matilda and her husband were not financially stable. They were part of the middle-class family and struggled to make ends meet. Matilda's husband worked as a clerk in the Ministry of Education, which was not a high-paying job, and they lived in a small apartment.


  • Matilda's High Expectations: Matilda had high expectations from life. She was beautiful, charming and had a taste for luxury. However, due to their financial condition, she could not afford the lifestyle she desired. Matilda dreamed of living a life of luxury and attending high-end parties, but her reality was different.


  • Matilda's Envy: Matilda was envious of the rich and lived a life of luxury. She was unhappy with her life and constantly compared it to others. Matilda was not content with what she had and always wanted more.
