Retina of Human Eyes

The retina is a layer of tissue at the back of the eye that contains photoreceptor cells. These cells convert light into neural signals that are transmitted to the brain, allowing us to see. The retina of human eyes contains the following features:

Three Layers of Cells

The retina contains three layers of cells from outside to inside – ganglion cells, bipolar cells, and photoreceptor cells.

Blind Spot

The point on the retina at which optic nerves leave the eye ball is called the blind spot. This area does not contain any photoreceptor cells and is therefore unable to detect light. However, the brain compensates for this by filling in the missing information based on the surrounding visual information.

Fovea

The fovea is a small, thinned-out portion of the retina located at the center of the macula. This region is responsible for our central vision and contains a high concentration of photoreceptor cells called cones. Cones are responsible for color vision and visual acuity, which is the ability to discern fine details.

Axon of Bipolar Cells

Axons of bipolar cells form the optic nerves. These nerves carry visual information from the retina to the brain, where it is processed and interpreted.

Correct Answer

The correct answer to the question is option C – The fovea is a thinned-out portion of the retina where only the cones are densely packed. The fovea is responsible for our central vision and contains a high concentration of cones, making it the most sensitive part of the retina.
