A single block brake shown in the figure has a torque capacity of 35 N – m. The coefficient of friction between friction lining and drum is 0.4. If the diameter of the drum is 400 mm, what will be the resultant hinge-pin reaction in Newton? (Answer up to the nearest integer)
    Correct answer is '317'. Can you explain this answer?

    A single block brake shown in the figure has a torque capacity of 35 ...
    We have α = 0.4, T = 35 N-m = 35000 N-mm and D = 400 mm.
    Torque capacity T = αRNr where RN is the normal reaction
    35000 = 0.4 RN x 200
    or RN = 437.5 N
    Taking moments about hinge A of lever,
    F x 550 + αRN x 80 = RN x 250
    550F = 437.5 x 250 - 0.4 x 437.5 x 80
    = 109375 - 14000 = 95375
    Actuating force, F = 95375/550 = 173.4 N
    Reaction at hinge, ↓ Ry = RN - F = 437.5 - 173.4 = 264.1 N
    ← Rx = αRN = 175 N
