Consider the following statements 'Rotation of the Earth':1. The eart...
Rotation of the Earth:

1. Earth rotates from west to east:
- The earth rotates around its axis from west to east, which is also known as counterclockwise direction.
- This means that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

2. Moving 15 degrees eastwards advances local time by 1 hour:
- Due to the rotation of the earth, different countries have different time zones.
- Each time zone is approximately 15 degrees of longitude wide.
- When we move from one time zone to another by going 15 degrees eastwards, local time is advanced by 1 hour.
- For example, if it is 12:00 pm in India, then it will be 1:00 pm in Bangladesh (which is 1 hour ahead of India) as it is located approximately 15 degrees east of India.

3. Moving 15 degrees westwards retards local time by 1 hour:
- Conversely, if we go westwards from one time zone to another, local time is retarded by 1 hour.
- For example, if it is 12:00 pm in India, then it will be 11:00 am in Pakistan (which is 1 hour behind India) as it is located approximately 15 degrees west of India.

Therefore, both statements 1 and 2 are correct. The rotation of the earth from west to east causes the time difference between different countries, and moving 15 degrees east or west affects the local time by 1 hour.

Consider the following statements 'Rotation of the Earth':1. The eart...
  • Since the earth makes one complete rotation of 360° in one day or 24 hours, it passes through 15° in one hour or 1° in 4 minutes.
  • We may thus conclude that places east of Greenwich see the sun earlier and gain time, whereas places west of Greenwich see the sun later and lose time.
  • If we know G.M.T., to find the local time, we merely have to add or subtract the difference in the number of hours from the given longitude, as illustrated below. Simple memory aid for this will be East-Gain-Add (E. G. A.) and West-Lose Subtract (W.L.S.).
