Plant need sunlight for preparing food by the process of photosynthesis. The food prepared by photosynthesis provides all the energy to a plant which it needs to grow. so, without sunlight plant can't grow.....

Maximum plants grow with the help of sunlight but their are some plant that can grow with out sunlight , like Dracaena , Bromeliads etc through some even thrive in floroscent light.I know you all have a strange reaction on my answer but if you have any doubt please and please check it on the Google....

Plants can survive without light only for shorter period of time until they consume their storage food. But for longer period of darkness (without sunlight) the plant would get etiolated; become pale yellow, thin and abnormally long in the absence of light and limited photoassimilate. Ultimately the plants growing under dark conditions will die because they would not be able to perform photosynthesis.However plants shows growth under artificial light grow of suitable wavelength.
