The Khilafat movement (1919–1924) was a pan-Islamic, political campaign launched by Muslims in British India to influence the British government and to protect the Ottoman Empire during the aftermath of World War I.

The Muslims in India as the muslims all over the world regarded the sultan of turkey as their spiritual leader, Khalifa.During the First world war, turkey allied with Germany and Austria against the britsh. When the war ended, the british took a stern attitude towards turkey and khalifa was removed from the power.This angered the Muslims in India and they demanded that the Khalifa control over Muslim sacred places be restored.Hence Khilafat movement accompanied with Non-cooperation movement was launched
