Determine the number of filter unit required for a population of 50,00...
Solution:

Given data:
Population = 50,000
Per capita demand = 150 Ipcd
Rate of filtration = 180 liters/ hr/ sq.m
Area of each unit = 100 sq.m
Running hours per day = 8 hr

We are supposed to determine the number of filter units required for a population of 50,000 whose per capita demand is 150 Ipcd.

Calculation:
Total water demand = Population × Per capita demand
= 50,000 × 150
= 7500000 liters/ day

Area required for filtration unit = Total water demand/ (Rate of filtration × Running hours)
= 7500000/ (180 × 8)
= 5208.33 sq.m

Number of filter units required = Total area required/ Area of each unit
= 5208.33/ 100
= 52.08 ≈ 53 (approx.)

Answer:
Therefore, the number of filter units required for a population of 50,000 whose per capita demand is 150 Ipcd, running for 8 hr per day with a rate of filtration of 180 liters/ hr/ sq.m and an area of each unit of 100 sq.m is 53 (approx.)

Note: It is always better to have one or two additional units as a standby in case of any emergency or maintenance work. Hence, the number of filter units can be rounded off to the next even number, i.e., 54.
