Differences between Lymph and Blood
- Composition: Blood is a fluid connective tissue that contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Lymph is a clear fluid that contains white blood cells and lymphocytes.
- Circulation: Blood circulates throughout the body in a closed system of blood vessels, whereas lymph circulates in an open system of lymphatic vessels.
- Function: Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells of the body and removes waste products. Lymph helps to maintain fluid balance in the body and fights infections by transporting white blood cells to the affected areas.
- Color: Blood is red due to the presence of hemoglobin in the red blood cells. Lymph is clear and colorless.
- Origin: Blood is produced in the bone marrow, while lymph is produced in the lymphoid tissues such as the thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes.
- Components: Blood contains various components such as nutrients, hormones, and antibodies. Lymph contains lymphocytes, which are specialized white blood cells that play a key role in the immune system.
- Transportation: Blood is transported through the circulatory system by the pumping action of the heart. Lymph is transported through the lymphatic vessels by the contraction of smooth muscles and the movement of skeletal muscles.
- Clotting: Blood has the ability to clot to prevent excessive bleeding. Lymph does not have the ability to clot.
- Volume: Blood makes up approximately 7% of the body weight, whereas lymph makes up approximately 1-2% of the body weight.
