Problem

Mohana covers a distance of 150 m in a certain time. If he increases his speed to 4 times its original speed, the time taken reduces by 30 seconds. Find the original time taken.

Solution

Let the original speed of Mohana be S and the time taken to cover the distance of 150 m be T.

Distance = Speed × Time

150 = S × T

Or, T = 150/S

When Mohana increases his speed to 4 times its original speed, his new speed becomes 4S.

His new time taken to cover the same distance of 150 m becomes (T - 30) seconds.

Distance = Speed × Time

150 = 4S × (T - 30)

Or, T - 30 = 150/4S

Or, T = 150/4S + 30

Substituting the value of T from the first equation, we get:

150/S = 150/4S + 30

Or, 1/S = 1/4S + 1/10

Or, 6/40S = 1/4S

Or, S = 40/6 = 20/3 m/s

Substituting the value of S in the first equation, we get:

T = 150/(20/3) = 22.5 seconds

Therefore, the original time taken by Mohana to cover the distance of 150 m is 22.5 seconds.
