Why is there a lack of internal democracy within the political parties...
#A political party is a group of people who come together to contest in elections and gain power in government#They agree on some policies and programmes of the people and strive hard to promote for their good in government#But it is not so in some countries like India, as some political parties does not fulfill the expectations of the people and do not perform the functions for the purpose they have been elected by the people#There is no internal democracy within political parties as all the parties in the world tend to gain more power which in turn is rested in the hands of few political leaders#They do not have membership registers, do not conduct meetings and do not conduct internal elections regularly#Ordinary and sincere members of the party do not get information of the happenings of the party in general#Hence, the big leaders assume greater power in taking important decisions of the party and they do not even consult the members#So, the loyal members find it difficult to stay in the party and hence, this dissatisfaction proves fatal to leaders as they are losing the honest and loyal members

Lack of Internal Democracy within Political Parties in India

There are several reasons contributing to the lack of internal democracy within political parties in India. These factors include:

1. Centralized Decision-making:
- Most political parties in India follow a top-down approach where key decisions are made by a select group of leaders or high command.
- This hierarchical structure undermines the participation of party members in decision-making processes, leading to a lack of internal democracy.

2. Dynastic Politics:
- Many political parties in India are dominated by families or dynasties, where leadership positions are often inherited rather than earned through a democratic process.
- This practice limits the opportunities for party members to rise through the ranks based on merit and undermines the principles of internal democracy.

3. Lack of Inner-party Elections:
- Internal party elections are essential for fostering a democratic environment within political parties.
- However, in India, the process of conducting regular, transparent, and fair internal elections is often overlooked or manipulated, leading to a lack of internal democracy.

4. Patronage Politics:
- Political parties in India heavily rely on patronage networks, where influential leaders distribute benefits and resources to loyal party members.
- This system discourages dissent and discourages internal debates, further eroding internal democracy.

5. Weak Party Institutions:
- Many political parties in India lack strong institutional frameworks and mechanisms to ensure internal democracy.
- Absence of robust internal party structures, such as grievance redressal mechanisms or transparent candidate selection processes, hampers the functioning of internal democracy.

6. Lack of Transparency and Accountability:
- Transparency and accountability are vital components of internal democracy, but these principles are often compromised in Indian political parties.
- Lack of transparency in party funding, candidate selection, and decision-making processes reduces the ability of party members to hold their leaders accountable.

7. Influence of Money and Muscle Power:
- Money and muscle power play a significant role in Indian politics, leading to the concentration of power in the hands of wealthy individuals or those with criminal backgrounds.
- Such influences undermine internal democracy by sidelining the voices of ordinary party members.

In conclusion, the lack of internal democracy within political parties in India can be attributed to factors such as centralized decision-making, dynastic politics, absence of inner-party elections, patronage politics, weak party institutions, lack of transparency and accountability, and the influence of money and muscle power. Addressing these issues is crucial for strengthening internal democracy and promoting a more inclusive and participatory political system in India.

Read the given extract and answer the questions that follows:Let us look at some of the recent efforts and suggestions in our country to reform political parties and its leaders:The Constitution was amended to prevent elected MLAs and MPs from changing parties. This was done because many elected representatives were indulging in DEFECTION in order to become ministers or for cash rewards. Now the law says that if any MLA or MP changes parties, he or she will lose the seat in the legislature. This new law has helped bring defection down. At the same time this has made any dissent even more difficult. MPs and MLAs have to accept whatever the party leaders decide. The Supreme Court passed an order to reduce the influence of money and criminals. Now, it is mandatory for every candidate who contests elections to file an AFFIDAVIT giving details of his property and criminal cases pending against him. The new system has made a lot of information available to the public. But there is no system of check if the information given by the candidates is true. As yet we do not know if it has led to decline in the influence of the rich and the criminals. The Election Commission passed an order making it necessary for political parties to hold their organisational elections and file their income tax returns. The parties have started doing so but sometimes it is mere formality. It is not clear if this step has led to greater internal democracy in political parties. Besides these, many suggestions are often made to reform political parties:A law should be made to regulate the internal affairs of political parties. It should be made compulsory for political parties to maintain a register of its members, to follow its own constitution, to have an independent authority, to act as a judge in case of party disputes, to hold open elections to the highest posts. It should be made mandatory for political parties to give a minimum number of tickets, about one third, to women candidates. Similarly, there should be a quota for women in the decision-making bodies of the party. There should be state funding of elections. The government should give parties money to support their election expenses. This support could be given in kind: petrol, paper, telephone, etc. Or it could be given in cash on the basis of the votes secured by the party in the last election.Answer the following MCQs by choosing the most appropriate options:Q.
