Democracy is the best form of government yet created. Therefore, we must be vigilant in its defense; that is, we must be prepared to defend the right to freedom. Because this right is fundamental to any progressive form of government, it is clear that democracy is better than any other form of government.
Which one of the following illustrates the same flawed reasoning as found in the passage?
  • a)
I never get a headache when I eat only Chinese food, nor when I drink only wine. But when I eat Chinese food and drink wine, I get a headache. So the combination of the two must be the cause of my headaches.
  • b)
The two times I have gone to that restaurant something bad has happened. The first time the waiter dropped a glass and it shattered all over the table. And after the second time I went there, I got sick. So why should I go there again—something bad will just happen again.
  • c)
I would much rather live a life dedicated to helping my fellow man than one dedicated to gaining material possessions and seeing my fellow man as a competitor. At the end of each day, the satisfaction of having helped people is infinitely greater than the satisfaction of having achieved something material.
  • d)
I’m obsessed with volleyball; that’s why I play it constantly. I train seven days a week, and I enter every tournament. Since I’m always playing it, I must be obsessed with it.
  • e)
In my academic studies, I have repeatedly changed majors. I decide to major in each new subject that I’m introduced to. Just as a bee lights from one flower to the next, tasting the nectar of each, I jump from one subject to the next getting just a taste of each.

Let's analyze each option and see which one matches the flawed reasoning:
(A) This option presents a flawed reasoning known as "post hoc, ergo propter hoc" or "after this, therefore because of this." The person assumes that because they experienced a headache after eating Chinese food and drinking wine together, the combination of the two must be the cause of their headaches. This is a flawed reasoning because there could be other factors contributing to the headaches, and correlation does not imply causation. However, this reasoning does not match the flawed reasoning found in the passage.
(B) This option presents a similar flawed reasoning. The person assumes that because something bad happened twice when they went to a restaurant, something bad will always happen if they go there again. This is an example of faulty generalization based on limited evidence. However, this reasoning does not match the flawed reasoning found in the passage.
(C) This option presents a different line of reasoning that does not match the flawed reasoning found in the passage. It discusses personal preferences and values, comparing the satisfaction derived from helping others with material achievements.
(D) This option matches the flawed reasoning found in the passage. The person assumes that because they constantly play volleyball, they must be obsessed with it. This is an example of circular reasoning because the conclusion ("I must be obsessed with it") is essentially the same as the premise ("I'm always playing it"). The reasoning does not provide any additional evidence or logical support for the conclusion.
(E) This option presents a different line of reasoning that does not match the flawed reasoning found in the passage. It discusses changing academic majors based on personal interest, using an analogy with a bee sampling nectar from different flowers.
Therefore, the correct answer is (D) because it exhibits the same flawed reasoning as found in the passage.

It is true that developments since the last war in Britain have so increased the progressive character of the income tax as to make the burden of taxation progressive throughout and that, through redistributive expenditure on subsidies and services, the income of the very lowest classes has been increased... by as much as 22 percent. But the latter development is little dependent on the present high rates of progression but is financed mainly by the contributions of the middle and upper ranges of the middle class. All arguments in support of progression can be used to justify any degree of progression. Its advocates may realize that beyond a certain point the adverse effects on the efficiency of the economic system may become so serious as to make it inexpedient to push it any further. But the argument based on the presumed justice of progression provides for no limitation, as has often been admitted by its supporters, before all incomes above a certain figure are confiscated and those below left untaxed. Unlike proportionality, progression provides no principle that tells us what the relative burden of different persons ought to be. It is no more than a rejection of proportionality in favor of a discrimination against the wealthy without any criterion for limiting the extent of this discrimination. Because there is no real rate of progression that can be demonstrated by formula, it is only the newness of the principle that has prevented its being carried at once to punitive rates. But there is no reason why a little more than before should not always be represented as just and reasonable. It is the great merit of proportional taxation that it provides a rule which is likely to be agreed upon by those who will pay absolutely more and those who will pay absolutely less and which, once accepted, raises no problem of a separate rule applying only to a minority. Even if progressive taxation does not name the individuals to be taxed at a higher rate, it discriminates by introducing a distinction that aims at shifting the burden from those who determine the rates onto others. In no sense can a progressive scale of taxation be regarded as a general rule applicable equally to all. In no sense can it be said that a tax of 20 percent on one persons income and a tax of 75 percent on the larger income of another person are equal. Progression provides no criterion whatever of what is and what is not to be regarded as just. It indicates no halting point for its application, and the good judgment of the people on which its defenders are usually driven to rely as the only safeguard is nothing more than the current state of opinion shaped by past policy.Q.Which of the following is an effect of the progressive-income tax?

In the year 1898, the United States made its earliest plunge into imperialism. For the first time, the nation secured overseas lands, dominions too thickly populated to be adapted for the purposes of colonization. By earlier conquests and purchases such as those of Louisiana, Florida, Texas, California, and New Mexico, the United States had secured relatively empty territories, which a flow of emigrants from the Eastern States of the US could rapidly Americanize. But in Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Hawaii, there was never a serious attempt to colonize on the part of the American citizens. The reasons behind these conquests were similar to the ones that led to the European partition of Africa in the 19th century. The year 1898 indeed represented a strong shift in the foreign policy.Even though in the years after the Civil War (1861-1865), Denmark offered to sell St. Thomas and St. Johns cheaply, the United States refused to purchase them, and declined to annex San Domingo or to entertain Swedens proposal to purchase its West Indian territory. In 1893, instead of annexing Hawaii, the US attempted to bolster up the sovereignty of the native Queen. Then suddenly Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam were annexed; Hawaii was incorporated and Samoa was divided with Germany. America finally abandoned isolationism for good.In part, this change in foreign policy was due to military considerations. The possession of Hawaii, Panama and Guantanamo in Cuba was obviously necessary for the defense of Americas coasts. Just as the Monroe Doctrine was intended to protect the country from the approach of great military powers, so these new acquisitions were desired to pre-empt close-lying bases, from which fleets in enemy possession could assail the countrys trade or cut off its communication. Such strategic considerations, however, do not explain the whole of the new imperialistic policy. Economic motives played a greater part. As a result of the Industrial Revolution, merchants had begun to think in terms of foreign markets and the US financiers in terms of foreign investments. The growing population had made increasing demands upon food products, leaving less to be exported, and at the same time exports of manufactures had increased. Many citizens believed that the United States could not afford to adhere to a policy of isolation while other nations were reaching out for the command of new markets.Which of the following statements best explains Americas sudden shift from isolationism to imperialism?
